As a reader you are entitled to know what your personal data is used for by this site. The following applies to all content hosted on exploringyorkshirebyrail. It was last updated on 05 November 2022.

E-mail addresses:
-
Comments – when you comment on any blog post you may be asked for an email address. Your email address is stored in our content management system (called Wix). Your email address may be used to reply directly to your comment should this be necessary, although generally any replies will be on the blog comments.
-
Contact forms – each page of the site has a link allowing you to get in touch directly. If you do so, an email address is required so that I can reply. These messages are stored in a Gmail inbox, provided by Google.

I take data protection very seriously and will only ever use your email address for the purposes listed above. I never send out unsolicited marketing emails.

If, for any reason, you do not want me to hold your email address in the systems noted above, or any other system I may decide to use in the future, then the best suggestion is not to get in touch in the first place.

Comments:
When you leave a comment on this site, it collects the data shown in the comments form, along with your IP address and browser user agent string. Comments are stored indefinitely.

If for any reason, you have an issue with that, then please don’t leave a comment.

Cookies:
Cookies are small text files stored on your computer which allow a website to identify you at a later date. Many websites use them, for example to stop you having to logon every time you visit.

Generally, exploringyorkshirebyrail only uses essential functional cookies, for example to support commenting functionality. If you ask to store your details when you submit a comment, the site will do this in a cookie. They do not track you as a user, but are used to establish that you are a user and not a robot.

Blog posts occasionally contain links to other websites, which may use cookies.
When you first visit Exploring Yorkshire by Rail you will be asked if you wish to allow cookies. You can accept or reject cookies. If you reject cookies, you will see the request to allow or deny cookies with every page view as your preferences cannot be storied without cookies.

If you have concerns about cookies, most web browsers allow you to disable or remove them – either by disabling them all, or by disabling just third party cookies. This website does not require or mandate cookies in order to view any page.
Web browser information and IP address:
Your web browser (Microsoft Edge, Chrome etc) reports various information to all web sites you visit. This is information about your computer, such as browser type and operating system.

All this data is served in log files on our server. This is true of all websites you visit, and whilst possible, it is not easy to disable if you wish to. However the data cannot be tracked to an individual person.

The site will also receive your IP address. It is not possible for a website to trace an IP address down to an individual (only your Internet Service Provider can do that) however it can be used to determine which country you live in.

If you send me an email or submit a blog comment then your IP address will be stored within my mail system (Google) or content management system (Wix) along with your email address.

Your rights over your data:
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data held about you, including any data you have provided . You can also request that I erase any personal data held about you. This does not include any data that I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is sent:
For the most part, your data isn't sent anywhere, although visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
