The City of Bradford comprises Bradford and its satellite towns and villages and is located in the top left-hand corner of West Yorkshire, west of the City of Leeds and with Calderdale and Kirklees at its southern border. If Bradford city centre is smaller than Leeds and feels like its poorer cousin, the metropolitan area nevertheless shares a similar character, until one explores its north and north-east, where it starts to share the rural characteristics of North Yorkshire, on which it borders.
Like the City of Leeds, the City of Bradford is rich in industrial heritage – we will once again revisit the Leeds and Liverpool canal and this time see one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways, whilst also discovering market towns and a famous Victorian model village. As we travel along the Wharfedale Line, we will eventually reach its terminus at Ilkley and stride out across the famous Ilkley Moor.
This time, there are sixteen extant railway stations on our tour, but only fifteen walks, since Bradford boasts two stations. There are no castles either, but at least one grand old house that has named itself as such. And we start the tour in Bradford itself.
